Barts Health NHS
million pounds saved
thousand m3 of water saved
With a turnover of £1.25 billion and a workforce of 15,000, Barts Health is the largest NHS Trust in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers. Its aim is to be the most sustainable Trust in the UK by 2020.
The NHS Trust joined the ground breaking AquaFund grant scheme when it was awarded a substantial grant from the multi-million-pound fund. Under the AquaFund grant scheme, supplied by water management specialists ADSM, the Hospital Trust was provided with everything necessary to make their water efficiencies and financial savings, including; the full grant, consultancy services, site audits and state-of-the-art water saving technologies, together with water data and tariff analysis, bill validation services and on-going monitoring.
In addition to the water consumption savings, the Trust particularly liked the scheme’s interface and support of WaterAid. The Fund donates 1% of all its revenue directly to the charity WaterAid, so Barts Health is helping this charity while also saving water. The success of the partnership between the Trust and ADSM is reflected in the level of savings achieved to date.
What We Did
What We’re Still Doing
Over the past few years the Trust has worked hard to reduce their CO2 emissions across all services; energy, waste, water, travel and procurement and have reduced their building energy emissions by 43% since 2007. This was reflected by the Trust achieving the Carbon Trust standard.
Barts Health NHS and ADSM won two prestigious awards for water in 2014. ADSM and Barts Health NHS Trust secured first place in the ‘Most Innovative Cost Saving Idea’ category in the Estates & Facilities Management class at the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2014 with their AquaFund initiative.
ADSM and Barts Health NHS Trust achieved a landslide victory in the water management category at the 2Degrees Champion Awards 2014, beating stiff competition from rivals Coca Cola, Pepsi, Sainsbury’s, H&M and the European Water Partnership.
Don’t Just Take Our Word For It
“The results of the partnership with ADSM have been better than imagined and this is proven through awards we have won for water management and the excellent levels of savings that we have achieved to date. The project continues to deliver positive changes, reducing the Trust’s impact on the environment and conserving a scarce resource for the future. “
